RENAISSANCE ESL 15A

What makes a masterpiece? Is the "Mona Lisa" just a picture of a woman smiling, or is there more to it?

We consider something a masterpiece when uncommon skill and artistry shape familiar elements unexpectedly, revealing an essential truth.

For MartinLogan, the essential truth revealed by the brand's skill and artistry is audio realism. Fittingly, MartinLogan's next generation of electrostatic loudspeakers debuts with the new Renaissance ESL 15A. Three decades of audio design and engineering innovation, distilled into a startlingly fresh loudspeaker ideal.

A Masterpiece of Design & Engineering

Befitting its name, the Renaissance ESL 15A represents the pinnacle of MartinLogan's electrostatic innovation, an extraordinary fusion of artistry, engineering, and acoustic excellence. Designed for the 21st century, this flagship loudspeaker delivers breathtaking transparency, lifelike detail, and an immersive listening experience that brings music and film vividly to life.

At its heart is the 15-inch Curvilinear Line Source (CLS™) XStat™ electrostatic transducer. Enhanced by Advanced MicroPerf stator technology, it provides nearly twice the radiating surface of conventional panels for exceptional clarity and precision. ClearSpar™ spacers maintain optimal diaphragm tension, while the rigid AirFrame™ construction ensures both structural integrity and striking aesthetics.

Complementing the electrostatic panel is a powerful, precision-engineered bass system. Dual 12-inch aluminium cone woofers, powered by twin 500-watt Class-D amplifiers, are driven by a 24-Bit Vojtko™ DSP Engine and refined with ARC™ (Anthem Room Correction) for seamless, room-optimised performance. MartinLogan's exclusive PoweredForce Forward™ technology minimises wall interactions, delivering deep, controlled, and realistic bass.

The result is a harmonious fusion of art and engineering, an uncompromising loudspeaker that defines true audio realism.

Achieving the Laboratory Standard in Your Own Room

In the lab, MartinLogan engineers pursue absolute transparency. In real homes, however, every listening room introduces variables that can dramatically affect bass performance. Room size, shape, and furnishings all influence how low frequencies behave.

For the first time in an electrostatic loudspeaker, MartinLogan integrates exclusive Anthem Room Correction (ARC™) technology. ARC measures your room’s low-frequency response and intelligently adjusts bass output to compensate for acoustic anomalies, delivering performance that closely mirrors MartinLogan’s reference listening environments.

Combined with PoweredForce Forward™ bass technology, ARC minimises room interaction and ensures seamless integration between the electrostatic panel and woofer system. The result is precisely focused imaging, natural tonal balance, and powerful, full-range performance at lifelike listening levels.

This level of refinement is what elevates the Impression ESL 11A from exceptional to truly masterful.

New Ultra-Rigid AirFrame Blade Design

Expression ESL 15A XStat panels are joined to their speaker cabinets using MartinLogan’s redesigned AirFrame Blade construction, precision manufactured from an aerospace-grade extruded aluminium alloy. This material and this exclusive manufacturing process make the panels extremely rigid, ensuring optimal performance and long-term structural integrity.

Sleek and purposeful, the AirFrame Blade rail system makes a bold visual statement, refined from the front and powerful in profile. Beyond its design, it is engineered to avoid obstructing the electrostatic panel or disrupting its natural dipole radiation pattern. The result is excellent electrical and acoustical isolation, reducing vibration and resonance that can lead to distortion.

The flowing lines emphasise the groundbreaking integration of the panel itself with the compact woofer and amplifier section. The breathtaking AirFrame Blade design enhances imaging, low-level sonic detail, accuracy, and speaker efficiency.

Curvilinear Line Source (CLS) Electrostatic Panel

CLS technology is an essential ingredient of every electrostatic loudspeaker MartinLogan produces. Through the brand's proprietary manufacturing method, MartinLogan has built-in the panel’s gentle horizontal curvature. This unique design enhances the high-frequency detail produced by the large radiating surface, without compromising overall sound quality. Notice how the gentle modern curve and perforation pattern give way to the flat grille of the woofer section.

Controlled Dispersion Sound Radiation

The sound we hear from a loudspeaker is a combination of direct radiation from it to our ears, and reflections off of room surfaces: walls, floor, and ceiling. How our brains integrate this information is far from simple. Depending on the angle of incidence to the ears and the arrival-time difference between direct and reflected sound, reflections can either blur detail and stereo imaging or enhance the natural impression of depth and openness.

Electrostatic panels, which are true dipole speakers, produce a nearly ideal controlled dispersion radiation pattern. They send very little sound to the sides, thereby minimising side-wall reflections, whose short arrival times tend to interfere with the perception of the direct sound. Their strong rear radiation, however, produces a generous amount of natural, ambience-enriching, later-arriving mid and upper register information.

New PoweredForce Forward™ Bass Technology

PoweredForce Forward bass technology combines two MartinLogan audio innovations: PoweredForce, which allows small enclosures to accurately produce massive amounts of bass, and ForceForward, which significantly reduces performance-robbing front-wall bass reflections.

PoweredForce Forward bass technology uses an advanced crossover topology with phase-timed woofers to minimise destructive reflected energy. By virtually eliminating front-wall bass reflections and working in tandem with the panel, PoweredForce Forward Bass Technology gives you more placement flexibility and enhances the true audio realism of your sound source.

Turning Unused Space Into Better Bass

The cabinet depth of MartinLogan’s Masterpiece Series speakers is precisely engineered to maximize the performance of both PoweredForce™ and ForceForward™ bass technologies. Combined with Anthem Room Correction (ARC™), this design delivers exceptionally powerful, detailed, and accurate low-frequency performance.

Each Masterpiece Series cabinet establishes an ideal balance between woofer placement, internal volume, and amplification. Two independently sealed enclosures, one for each woofer, provide ample air volume and precise control, allowing the powered woofer system to reach deep bass frequencies with authority while preserving clarity and detail.

ForceForward™ bass technology addresses a common challenge in speaker design: low-frequency soundwaves reflecting off the wall behind the speaker and interfering with those traveling toward the listener. By carefully controlling the phase relationship between opposing woofers, ForceForward™ minimizes these reflections, reducing bass cancellations and excess energy for a cleaner, more accurate response.

This controlled bass launch also simplifies speaker placement. By minimizing rearward bass energy, Masterpiece Series speakers can be positioned closer to the wall than previous generations. As a general guideline, the rear of the cabinet should be no closer to the wall than the diameter of its woofer—12 inches for Renaissance ESL 15A, 10 inches for Expression ESL 13A, and 8 inches for Impression ESL 11A and Classic ESL 9. For additional fine-tuning, powered Masterpiece Series models include dual bass level controls at 75Hz and 200Hz.

As with all electrostatic designs, the dipole panel performs best when placed at least 2.5 feet from the wall behind it, a distance that benefits not only electrostatic speakers but nearly all high-performance loudspeakers.
